UBS Triton Property Fund

 

John is chair of the independent Supervisory Board of the £930 million UK balanced fund. During the year, he was re-elected by the investors for a further three year term.

 

Ginkgo Advisor Limited

 

John was appointed as non-executive chairman of Ginkgo Advisor Limited, as Edmond de Rothschild’s specialist brownfield investment firm Ginkgo opens for business in the UK. Ginkgo is launching fundraising for a £100 million private equity fund that will invest in regenerating contaminated urban land in the UK. The fund is a partnership between Ginkgo, and igloo – a sustainable property regeneration specialist in the UK. The fund aims to regenerate derelict industrial land to allow the building of attractive and vibrant urban neighbourhoods.

 

Urban Splash Residential Fund

 

During the year John was appointed as independent chair of the Strategy Board of the new UK residential fund recently launched by Urban Splash. The fund had a first close with initial £20 million of seed funding in March.

 

Contributing to the real estate investment management industry

 

John has had another very busy year with industry body roles. He continues to chair the Urban Land Institute (ULI) UK Capital Markets Committee and is a vice chair of the ULI UK Executive Committee. He is a member of the Investment Property Forum (IPF) Indirect Investment Committee and the Association of Real Estate Funds (AREF) Public Affairs Committee.

He has been particularly involved over the year in three key areas, the changes to UK capital gains rules, the regulation of open ended funds and fund pricing for open ended funds.

 

Capital gains changes

 

The original consultation on the taxing gains made by non-residents on UK immovable property was published in November 2017 and was hugely problematic for the real estate fund industry. John was heavily involved in the original industry response. Following this lobbying, the draft legislation for the Capital Gains Tax changes, along with a response to the consultation was published on 6th July 2018, with a further round of consultation.

 

John contributed to the AREF response. He also spoke at various seminars and on a  Real Estate Investor Forum conference call for investors.

 

Regulation of open ended funds

 

This continued to be highly topical.
